Import Export Code (IEC)

International trade opens significant growth opportunities for businesses in India. Whether a company plans to import goods, export products, or expand into global markets, obtaining an Importer Exporter Code (IEC) is a fundamental requirement for entering the international trade ecosystem.

The IEC is issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. It is a mandatory registration for all importers and exporters operating in India.

IEC Code stands for Importer Exporter Code. It is a mandatory registration required for any business entity intending to import goods into India or export goods from India. Commonly referred to as the IEC number, it is a unique ten-digit identification number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).

Obtaining a DGFT IEC Registration Certificate is compulsory for businesses engaged in international trade. Before initiating any import transaction, the importing entity must ensure it possesses both a valid GST registration and an IEC. These registrations are essential for customs clearance and for processing international payments through authorized banking channels.

In the absence of a valid GST registration and IEC, imported goods may be held at the port, resulting in demurrage charges, financial losses, or even confiscation or destruction of the goods. Therefore, businesses must comply with all applicable rules and regulations while applying for the IEC through the official DGFT portal to ensure smooth and uninterrupted import-export operations.
