The Startup India initiative is a flagship program launched on 16 January 2016 by the Government of India to promote entrepreneurship, foster innovation, and build a strong startup ecosystem across the country. The scheme aims to transform India into a nation of job creators rather than job seekers by supporting new and emerging businesses with policy reforms, financial assistance, and regulatory ease.

Under this initiative, eligible businesses can obtain recognition from the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). DPIIT-recognised startups gain access to numerous benefits, including income tax exemptions for eligible years, easier compliance under labour and environmental laws, fast-track patent examination, and reduced intellectual property filing fees. The scheme also facilitates access to government funding support through the Fund of Funds for Startups (FFS) and enables participation in government tenders with relaxed eligibility norms.

Startup India encourages innovation-driven enterprises across sectors by providing mentorship, incubation support, networking opportunities, and market access. Overall, the initiative plays a vital role in strengthening India’s entrepreneurial landscape and accelerating economic growth.
