ESI Registration

Employee State Insurance (ESI) Registration is a mandatory statutory compliance for eligible businesses in India, governed by the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC). This registration ensures that employees earning up to a prescribed wage limit are covered under the ESI Scheme, which provides social security and health insurance benefits to employees and their dependents.

Depending on the nature of the establishment and the state in which it operates, ESI registration is generally applicable to businesses employing 10 or more employees (20 employees in certain states).

The Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) scheme operates under the provisions of the ESI Act, 1948. It is a government-backed social security initiative aimed at providing medical, financial, and insurance benefits to eligible employees. The scheme is administered by the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC). Employers are required to register their establishments with ESIC and submit employee details to ensure coverage under the scheme.

Under the ESI Act, an “establishment” refers to any organised entity employing individuals, irrespective of its physical setup or nature of operations. This includes factories, commercial establishments, retail outlets, and shops. Registration under ESI becomes mandatory for establishments employing 10 employees (or 20 employees in certain states), provided the employees earn wages up to ₹21,000 per month (₹25,000 per month for employees with disabilities).
